Wind Energy

We’ve only begun to tap the potential for wind power generation.

Pennsylvania alone has enough wind power potential to provide electricity for nearly 5 million homes, according to Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell.

PPL has made a 20-year commitment to buy the electricity generated at two wind farms in Pennsylvania and has agreed to buy half of the renewable energy credits produced by a new wind farm in West Virginia. The three projects total 132 megawatts of renewable energy.  In addition, PPL Renewable Energy partnered with the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority to build a 3.2 MW wind energy project at the Frey Farm Landfill to provide electricity to the adjacent Turkey Hill Dairy.

Continuing our commitment to support the development of renewable energy projects, PPL is exploring partnerships to enhance wind power projects.

Nedpower

PPL EnergyPlus will buy half of the renewable energy credits generated by the first phase of the 164-megawatt wind farm in Grant County, W.Wa., over the next several years. The purchase of renewable energy credits supports renewable energy by providing some financial certainty for project development.

Frey Farm

PPL Renewable Energy and the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority are developing a small wind energy project at the Frey Farm Landfill to provide electricity to the adjacent Turkey Hill Dairy. The 3.2 MW project – two wind turbines – will provide 25 percent of Turkey Hill’s annual electricity needs. The project has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection through the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, which was supported with stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
